CWA Date & Ginger Cake Recipe

I decided to pull out the old CWA cook book that I found amongst all my books last night looking for a date cake recipe.  I can remember mum using this book so much when I was growing up.  I was so glad she never threw it out.   It is so easy these days to find recipes on the internet but I still love using my cook books when I can.  This cake turned out so good.  Very moist.  Recipe below if anyone wants to try it.  I added to the original recipe but not much.

Date and Ginger Cake

1 cup chopped dates
125 grams butter
1 cup water
3 tablespoons of golden syrup
1 tablespoon of ground ginger
1/4 cup of ginger pieces
1 3/4 cups of plain flour
1 egg
1 teaspoon of bi-carb of soda
1 teaspoon of baking powder.

Method:
In a saucepan over low heat add dates, butter, water, ginger pieces and ground ginger until the butter has disolved.  Remove from heat and add in bi- carb.  Let the mix sit until just warm.  Stir in flour, egg and baking powder.  Pour into a greased, floured tin and bake in a MOD oven 160 c or 150c for fan force for 1 1/2 hours.

Enjoy!

  3. Just popped over from Mrs Acidents link up. My youngest son (5) 'bought' me a newly published CWA Cookbook for mother's day, it's terrific, it's full of old recipies used when entering baking competitions, I've made about 4 of the recipies so far, and besides the Brownie recipie, (which was nothing like today's brownies, but still tasted lovely) everything I have baked is a winner!

  6. I collect old cookbooks and am a CWA member...my CWA ladies have given me many of their old ones...they are truly treasures...don't you love when they have shopping lists jammed in them, notes in the margin, cut outs from old magazines yellowed with time?
